"Own less, own well. I believe in creating pieces that earn their place in your home through both beauty and function."
From her Brooklyn studio, Farrah transforms necessity into beauty—creating sculptural planters that bridge the gap between urban living and our deep need for nature's presence.
Farrah creates architectural planters that function as sculptural vessels for urban greenery. Her signature approach combines precise geometric forms with organic inspiration, resulting in modular pieces that bring Bauhaus-influenced design to contemporary living spaces. Each planter begins as a study in proportion and negative space, meticulously engineered for both indoor and outdoor use. Her attention to functional details—like cork-lined bases that protect surfaces and perfectly calculated drainage systems—reflects her industrial design background at RISD and years at Calvin Klein Home. Working primarily in high-fired ceramics and sustainable materials, she employs techniques that ensure each piece develops subtle variations in texture and color. Her geometric forms create visual rhythm when grouped together, allowing plant collections to become architectural installations that transform any space into a considered environment.
After years designing for Calvin Klein Home and traveling the world working with family manufacturers, Farrah experienced a creative awakening that led her away from mass production. In 2011, faced with an overflowing collection of plants in her small Brooklyn apartment, she created the Spora planter out of pure necessity—a moment that launched Light + Ladder and redefined her path as a maker. Her "own less, own well" philosophy emerged from questioning her role in a marketplace increasingly dominated by disposable goods. Rather than compromise her values, she returned to the intimate process of handcraft, spending evenings and retreats at Maine's Haystack Mountain School of Craft to reconnect with materials. Today, her architectural planters are featured in the Tortuga Forma collection, where her commitment to modular, space-conscious design continues to evolve. This transition from corporate design to artisanship allows her to explore each piece organically, letting form emerge from function. Her parallel high-end venture, Farrah Sit, continues to explore lighting and furniture, but Light + Ladder remains her mission to make thoughtful design accessible to conscious consumers.
Tortuga Forma planters are crafted from high-fired ceramics chosen for durability and subtle beauty that improves with age. The clay bodies develop deeper character through exposure to moisture and light, while maintaining structural integrity for years of use. Each piece features thoughtful details like cork-lined bases that protect furniture surfaces and precisely calculated drainage systems that support healthy plant growth. The geometric forms are designed to nest and stack when not in use, reflecting Farrah's commitment to space-conscious urban living. With proper care—gentle cleaning and protection from extreme temperature changes—these planters develop a rich patina that speaks to their handmade origins. The sustainable materials age gracefully, becoming more beautiful as they become part of your plant care ritual.
