Tilly Doro
"My grandmother Tilly taught us that nothing should be wasted or taken for granted. Her favorite gifts were the ones we made by hand—that value has stayed with me."
From her New York studio, Nogah Rotstein transforms discarded materials from fast fashion into modern heirlooms, creating jewelry that honors both ancestral wisdom and environmental responsibility.
The Craft
Tilly Doro creates contemporary jewelry from rescued materials, transforming deadstock from fast fashion manufacturers into sculptural pieces worthy of passing down. Nogah hand-forms each piece using traditional metalworking techniques, sculpting textured shapes that are then cast in recycled brass and zinc before receiving lustrous gold plating. Her signature approach juxtaposes refined metal elements with organic materials—dyed rope, vintage fabric, and hand-applied enamel—creating pieces that feel both ancient and thoroughly modern. Each necklace, earring, and bracelet undergoes a meticulous hand-finishing process where textures are deliberately enhanced and asymmetrical elements are carefully balanced. This treasure-hunting approach to materials means no two pieces are identical, with vintage components and reclaimed metals bringing their own history and patina to every design.

The Maker
Nogah Rotstein founded Tilly Doro after more than a decade creating private label accessories for brands like Anthropologie and Free People, but her jewelry journey began with her grandmother's teachings about resourcefulness and handmade value. Guided by intuition and embracing happy accidents, she originally collected vintage jewelry to reimagine into one-of-a-kind pieces, letting each salvaged element inform the final design. Her studio practice is rooted in treasure hunting—sourcing deadstock materials that would otherwise enter landfills and transforming them through careful craftsmanship. The brand name honors her grandmother Tilly, a Holocaust survivor whose lessons about waste and gratitude continue to shape every design decision. This personal connection to sustainability isn't performative—it's foundational, driving a creative process that sees possibility where others see waste.

Materials & Care
Each Tilly Doro piece combines recycled brass and zinc with carefully sourced vintage elements—fabric, rope, and enamel that carry their own stories. The recycled metals are hand-cast and finished with gold plating that develops a gentle patina over time, enhancing the jewelry's heirloom quality. Vintage fabric components may show subtle variations and character marks that speak to their previous life, adding authenticity rather than imperfection. Care is simple: gentle cleaning with a soft cloth preserves the gold plating, while the underlying recycled metals ensure durability. These pieces are designed to age gracefully, with natural wear becoming part of their story—much like true heirlooms passed through generations.
