Materials & Care
"We design and make most everything in-house. We obsess about our craftsmanship and pay a lot of attention to detail, but we're also just vibin'."
From their Houston studio, five 90's kids turned their weekly creative meetups into a design collective that celebrates the intersection of practical function and pure joy—creating terrazzo concrete objects that bring personality to everyday moments.
Pretti.Cool specializes in hand-cast terrazzo concrete objects that transform mundane household tasks into moments of delight. Their signature technique involves integrally mixing recycled glass aggregate and pigments directly into concrete, creating speckled patterns in bold colors like marigold, millennial melon, and cobalt that can't be replicated. Each piece begins in custom-made rubber molds in their Houston studio, where the collective hand-casts everything in small batches. Their terrazzo formula produces naturally unique variations—no two pieces are identical, with each displaying its own personality through color distribution and natural voids that occur during casting. What sets them apart is their obsessive attention to functional details: soap dishes designed with precise drainage angles, coasters that never stick to glasses, and sponge rests shaped to encourage proper drying. Every piece undergoes careful finishing and sealing with food-grade protection, balancing durability with the material's honest, porous character.
Founded in 2017, Pretti.Cool emerged from something beautifully simple: five Houston creatives who wanted an excuse to meet regularly and "shoot the sh*t over beers." Kathrine Zeren Gilmer, Jeff Gilmer, Mike Garman, Kari Breitigam, and Erick Sandlin each brought distinct artistic backgrounds—textiles, photography, painting, furniture design—but shared a vision for products that are both practical and fun. What started as casual meetups (they almost launched a podcast called "Three Beers Deep") evolved into a collaborative design practice where only the best ideas survive the group critique process. This collective approach means every product reflects multiple perspectives and artistic disciplines. As self-described "artsy weirdos" who spent their school lunches in the art room, they've created a brand that celebrates being a little different—embracing playfulness without sacrificing sophistication.
Pretti.Cool's terrazzo concrete combines Portland cement with carefully selected recycled glass aggregate, creating surfaces that feel substantial yet refined in the hand. Their custom color formulations—from soft neutrals to vibrant "jawbreaker" multicolor—are mixed directly into the concrete for consistent color throughout each piece. Natural variations and small pin holes are embraced as part of the material's honest character. Each piece receives food-grade sealing while maintaining concrete's naturally porous quality, which means gentle patina development over time is expected and celebrated. Care is intentionally simple: wipe clean with mild soap and water, never submerge. The material's durability improves with age, and light staining on lighter colors becomes part of each piece's personal story—perfectly aligned with Element Made's philosophy of products that grow more beautiful through use.
