AnZa
"We set out to create a machine that felt different—a machine with a simple aesthetic and a soul of expressive materials. One that combines innovative design with a tactile experience, bringing a sense of connection to your coffee ritual."
From a Berkeley design studio next to an espresso repair shop to their current home in Stavanger, Norway, AnZa transforms the everyday espresso machine into sculptural art—proving that the most essential rituals deserve the most extraordinary design.
The Craft
AnZa reimagines espresso machines through unconventional materials and brutalist aesthetics. Each machine features hand-cast concrete shells that celebrate raw industrial beauty, paired with precision-engineered coffee technology. Their signature concrete models undergo meticulous casting processes, creating unique surface textures and character marks that make every machine one-of-a-kind. The elegant White machines feature seamless solid surface construction with clean, minimalist lines accented by warm oiled wood and polished brass details. Every AnZa machine houses dual-use single boiler systems with electronic PID temperature control, ensuring café-quality espresso while serving as sculptural centerpieces. The thoughtful integration of premium materials—wood and ceramic portafilters, concrete tampers, brass components—creates tactile experiences that engage all the senses. These machines transform daily coffee rituals into moments of connection with authentic materials and thoughtful design.

The Maker
AnZa Coffee began in a Berkeley design studio strategically located next to an espresso machine repair shop, where founders Andrew Smith and Per Selvaag were surrounded by coffee culture daily. Noticing that most espresso machines were visually bland—"all made of the same stainless steel"—they envisioned a different approach. Per's automotive design background, including work at BMW, Ford, and Peugeot, brought precision engineering to their mission of creating machines with simple aesthetics and souls of expressive materials. After launching their first machine on Kickstarter in 2017 to enthusiastic response, the company has evolved and grown. Now based in Stavanger, Norway, they continue refining every detail to improve their machines while maintaining their core philosophy: an espresso machine should be more than just a tool—it should be an experience that brings joy not only with every cup but in the way it feels and looks on your countertop.

Materials & Care
AnZa's signature concrete is hand-cast using a proprietary formula that creates exceptional density and unique surface textures. Each concrete shell develops distinctive character marks—subtle chips and color evolution that enhance the material's honest expression over time. The smooth Corian versions feature DuPont's stain-resistant solid surface material, offering effortless maintenance while maintaining architectural elegance. Brass components develop a natural patina through oxidation, though they can be polished to maintain their original luster using standard brass cleaners. The oiled wood handles benefit from periodic treatment with wood polish to preserve their warm finish. All machines are built around precision stainless steel boilers and premium components designed for longevity. With proper care, these machines improve with age, developing the character that only comes from daily ritual and material authenticity.
