AnZa Coffee began in a Berkeley design studio strategically located next to an espresso machine repair shop, where founders Andrew Smith and Per Selvaag were surrounded by coffee culture daily. Noticing that most espresso machines were visually bland—"all made of the same stainless steel"—they envisioned a different approach. Per's automotive design background, including work at BMW, Ford, and Peugeot, brought precision engineering to their mission of creating machines with simple aesthetics and souls of expressive materials. After launching their first machine on Kickstarter in 2017 to enthusiastic response, the company has evolved and grown. Now based in Stavanger, Norway, they continue refining every detail to improve their machines while maintaining their core philosophy: an espresso machine should be more than just a tool—it should be an experience that brings joy not only with every cup but in the way it feels and looks on your countertop.
