Experimental Concrete Design from Mexico City, Mexico

MDC

"We improve Mexico through design. We started experimenting with concrete without the goal of making furniture—but the material showed us what was possible."

From their workshop in Mexico City, MDC transforms everyday concrete into bold, functional furniture that challenges traditional design boundaries. Founded by architecture students turned concrete innovators, they prove that humble materials can create extraordinary objects.

The Craft

MDC specializes in transforming concrete—a mixture of cement, sand, water, and natural aggregates—into sophisticated furniture and architectural elements. Their mastery lies in pushing concrete beyond conventional limits, creating everything from simple geometric forms to complex sculptural pieces. Each piece begins as a fluid mixture that's carefully poured into precision molds, then undergoes their proprietary curing process that transforms liquid into stone-like permanence. They've evolved from purely artisanal methods to incorporating industrial processes that maintain quality while meeting market demand. Their signature approach embraces concrete's natural aging process—micro-fissures, color variations, and developing patina are celebrated as design features that tell each piece's unique story. Working primarily in polished and rustic finishes across white, black, and natural gray tones, they've mastered the art of making concrete both durable and beautiful.

The Maker

MDC began in 2014 when a group of architecture student friends in Mexico City started experimenting with concrete, not initially intending to create furniture. The material's moldable nature and durability captivated them, revealing possibilities they hadn't anticipated. What started as material exploration evolved into a multidisciplinary team dedicated to innovation in design and architecture through concrete applications. Their philosophy centers on seizing daily opportunities without knowing exactly where they'll lead, but with confidence that passion and effort will guide their path. As a close-knit team, they've grown from experimental makers to Mexico's leading brand in design-focused concrete prefabricates, always pushing the material's limits through new technologies and processes. Their name "MDC" reflects their mission: improving Mexico through design, one concrete piece at a time.

Materials & Care

MDC's concrete formula creates objects that age beautifully over time, developing character through use. Like natural stone, each piece varies slightly in color, porosity, and texture—variations that add to rather than detract from their beauty. The natural aging process includes the development of patina, subtle color changes, and gentle softening of edges that record each piece's unique history. Micro-fissures and usage marks are considered design features, not defects, as they contribute to concrete's evolving aesthetic. Their pieces require minimal maintenance but benefit from gentle care—avoiding direct cutting on surfaces and protecting from extreme temperature changes. While naturally resistant and durable, concrete develops deeper character when treated with attention, darkening slightly over time while maintaining its structural integrity for decades.
