"I merge form with reason to create pieces that aren't just beautiful—they're built to last generations. Every grain tells a story, every joint matters."
In rural Louisiana, architect-turned-furniture maker Kyle Comeaux transforms premium domestic hardwoods into contemporary furniture and accessories that celebrate the natural beauty and enduring strength of American timber.
KOMOLAB specializes in contemporary furniture and home accessories crafted from premium domestic hardwoods—rich walnut, sturdy white oak, and elegant maple sourced from American forests. Kyle's architectural training informs his meticulous approach to joinery and proportion, employing traditional woodworking techniques refined through modern sensibilities. Each piece begins with careful lumber selection, examining grain patterns and character marks that will define the finished work. His signature approach emphasizes clean lines and honest construction—mortise and tenon joints, precise dados, and hand-finished surfaces that showcase the wood's natural beauty. For select pieces, Kyle incorporates high-density concrete elements that complement the warmth of wood with industrial strength, creating striking contrasts in texture and weight. The finishing process involves multiple coats of food-safe oils and waxes that penetrate the wood fibers, protecting against daily use while allowing the natural grain to remain tactile and vibrant.
Kyle founded KOMOLAB in 2015, shortly after completing his Master of Architecture degree from University of Louisiana at Lafayette. His transition from designing buildings to crafting furniture stems from a desire to work more intimately with materials and create pieces people interact with daily. Driven by a quest to explore "useful aesthetics", Kyle designs minimalist products that prioritize both function and enduring beauty. Working from his studio in rural Louisiana, he maintains complete control over every aspect of production—from sourcing regional hardwoods to the final hand-sanding that gives each surface its distinctive smoothness. The process for Komolab merges form with reason to evolve ideas that result in a bold and practical aesthetic. His architectural eye for proportion and structural integrity translates beautifully to furniture design, resulting in pieces that feel both substantial and refined.
KOMOLAB works primarily with domestic hardwoods ranging from dark walnut to white oak and maple, each selected for its unique grain characteristics and structural properties. These premium American timbers are sustainably sourced and carefully dried to ensure dimensional stability. For mixed-media pieces, Kyle pairs wood with high-quality concrete elements that add structural interest and contemporary appeal. Kyle applies multiple coats of food-safe finishes to wood surfaces that penetrate deep into the fibers, creating protection that won't chip or flake over time. All products are crafted in-house to the highest standard of quality, with traditional joinery techniques ensuring strength that improves with age. Regular care involves occasional application of furniture oil to maintain the wood's natural luster, while concrete elements can be cleaned with mild soap and water. The robust construction means these pieces will develop beautiful character through decades of daily use.
